After making headlines earlier this month for her space trip, American singer Katy Perry will now return to perform in China for the first time since the Taiwan controversy nearly 10 years ago.
The Zhejiang Provincial Bureau of Culture and Tourism recently announced that pop star Katy Perry is planning to hold two concerts at an 18,000-seat stadium in Hangzhou on November 21 and 22. The concert will be the 40-year-old singer's first performance in mainland China after years of being denied a visa by China due to controversial reports that she supports the Taiwan independence movement.
The concert will come eight years after the “Roar” singer was denied entry to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai in 2017. At the time, Beijing did not specify the reason behind her visa denial, but US outlet Page Six reported that Perry was banned from performing in mainland China due to controversy surrounding her concert in Taiwan in 2015.
It is worth recalling that during a performance in Taipei, Taiwan, the pop singer wore a sunflower-shaped dress with the Taiwanese flag, as the flower is a symbol of the student movement opposing the trade agreement between Taiwan and mainland China.
Katy Perry performed in China for the first time in Beijing in 2014. The following year, she returned and performed a three-day concert, two days in Shanghai and one day in Guangzhou.
